Davis Cup at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club

In February 2006, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club played host to the Davis Cup First Round Tie by BNP Paribas. The United States defeated Romania to move on to the quarterfinals.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club's tie to the Davis Cup dates back to 1942 when William Scripps Kellogg brought one of the five oldest tournaments in the world to town - the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, a tournament known as the inspiration for the Davis Cup competition.

It started as an east coast/west coast rivalry. The highest ranking Eastern players, Dwight Davis, Malcolm Whitman, Holcombe Ward and Beals Wright, were all Harvard students or graduates. The West was represented by two brother teams, Samuel and Sumner Hardy and George and Robert Whitney, from Berkeley. The rivalry so inspired the players they proposed a similar match between the U.S. and England and the first Davis Cup match was played at the Longwood Cricket Club in Boston in 1900. By 1904 other countries joined the fray and the rest is history.
